Who we are

Handcrafted gins, distilled in the heart of London

Whitley Neill Gin is a premium handcrafted artisanal gin range and an established English brand dating back to 1762. Whitley Neill Gin is distilled at the multi-award-winning City of London Distillery, the first Gin distillery in the City of London in 200yrs. (It’s still the only distillery in the City of London).

Johnny Neill is the founder and 8th generation distiller who combined his craft with English provenance to produce the finest of Gins, using 29 of the highest quality of botanicals discovered and sourced globally. Johnny Neill’s first creation is The Whitley Neill London Dry Gin, a classic dry gin but not as you know it, softer and much smoother than traditional Gins, with rich juniper notes, citrus and exotic botanicals cape gooseberry and baobab fruit.

This exquisite London Dry Gin was the start of his love affair with exciting flavour and pushing boundaries in Gin distillation. Our range is unparalleled when it comes to innovation. We have a delicious and hugely exciting range of flavoured Gins inspired by the tastes from around the world.

From the nation’s favourite, Whitley Neill Rhubarb and Ginger Gin, to the new seasonal Whitley Neill Mango and Lime Gin, our Gins bring back the fun and exploration into mixology at home. We thrive on versatility when it comes to ways to serve our Gins; try them with a simple mixer, in a spritz, or for something different, a Ginsecco.

Meet Johnny Neill, 8th generation family member

My fascination with gin and its complex distillation process had begun; and under my Grandmother’s expert guidance, I learnt how, by simply infusing the crisp sharpness of juniper berries with a variety of other flavours and aromas, the taste could change dramatically.

And for me that was the attraction. I was like an alchemist and from that moment onwards, I was driven to create a blend of gin that captured my family’s passion and something altogether more exotic, enigmatic, and mysterious.

I distilled the tart fruit pulp to release a distinctive citrus flavour, quite unlike any other. And to reflect the role the Baobab tree played in the creation of Whitley Neill Gin, I decided to make its distinctive roots-up silhouette the symbol of our brand. My next botanical was the Physalis Peruviana or Cape gooseberry as it’s known in South Africa. These flavoursome bitter-sweet berries added a whole new dimension to the aroma.

I then took 6 other carefully selected botanicals to create my secret recipe, but that’s a whole different story…

Where to Find Us

Steeped in heritage and uniquely positioned within the City of London’s historic Square Mile, our range produces award-winning handcrafted gins at the City of London Distillery. Maintaining the rich history of gin production in London, whilst also looking to new contemporary ideas, the City of London Distillery has been awarded 65 international medals in gin distilling since opening in 2012. The distillation process will continue to incorporate Whitley Neill Original’s nine distinctive botanicals, including Baobab and Cape Gooseberries, with distillation in handcrafted batches.

About The City of London Distillery

The City of London Distillery is the first Gin distillery in London for 200yrs (it’s still the only distillery in the City of London). Since 2012 the distillery began producing gin on a pair of 200l copper pot stills called Clarissa and Jennifer (named after ‘The Two Fat Ladies’ of the BBC food show).

In 2016 as the distillery grew, a larger 500L pot still was brought in alongside the original pair to scale up production. This new larger still was launched in 2016 on the Queen’s 90th Birthday and named Elizabeth accordingly.

The goal of the City Of London Distillery has always been to bring back and maintain the heritage and history of London’s gin production whilst incorporating new contemporary ideas. The City of London Distillery has been producing award-winning gins for seven consecutive years, with 65 medals won across the range of Gins, including 4 Double Golds & 5 Golds at IWSC and 6 Golds at SFWSC and 3 Spirits Business Gin Masters.
